Year 5

The Year 5 team consists of three teachers :

  • Mrs Moody
  • Mrs Shearman
  • Mrs Carey

They are assisted by Miss Scott, Mrs Davidson and Ms Richards. Mrs Shilton leads the Upper Key Stage 2 Team.

When moving into Year 5, the children are joining South End Junior School’s ‘Upper Hub’. It is our aim to equip children with tools to further develop their independence as learners and help them learn skills for life, which they can then apply to a variety of situations. As a year team, we endeavour to do this by providing engaging, purposeful and exciting learning opportunities and having high expectations of the children in terms of behaviour and work ethic. We strive for all children to achieve their full potential and be confident young people.

I found out that Katherine Johnson was the person to send Apollo 11 into space but her job was wrongly made difficult because of her skin colour.

I learnt a way to remember the order of the planets which is: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Did you know it takes four weeks (28 days) for the moon to fully orbit Earth? Also, the moon goes through 8 phases!

I know now that Henry VIII had six wives and he beheaded two of them - Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. He divorced Catherine Of Aragon and Anne Of Cleves. Jane Seymour was his true love but she died 12 days after giving Henry his son.

Before we did this project, I didn't know what the punishments were during Tudor times and how bad they were! I now know there were many punishments like the drunkards cloak, hung drawn and quartered and boiling.

Did you know that Tudors didn't live as long because they didn't have medicines? Rich Tudors easily became overweight and unhealthy because they didn't know what healthy food was and both rich and poor Tudors ate little fruit.
