Art

Our intent:

At South End Junior School, we are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to engage in art. We believe that every child within our school should have full access to art as stated in the National Curriculum regardless of age, gender or ability.  Instilling a growth mindset is key to our children developing their skills in this subject. Children will explore cultural arts and historical crafts from different time periods, allowing them to develop an understanding and appreciation of diversity.

Our art curriculum overview can be viewed here.

Our way:

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at SEJ is based on the National Curriculum. In accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language and vocabulary of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

The long-term overview for this subject has been carefully created to progressively teach and develop the skills of drawing and painting, printing and 3D sculpture. Each year group has a theme that runs across all three projects.  The work of professional and famous artists in history and present day are explored. The children can then use this knowledge to enhance their learning and influence their own work.

Sketchbooks are used to record the children’s ideas and observations. They are also used to review and revisit ideas, and practise skills prior to developing a final piece of artwork.
