Year 5
The Year 5 team consists of three teachers :
- Mrs Moody
- Mrs Jennings
- Mr Woodcock
They are assisted by Mrs Bassi, Miss Scott and Mrs Shortland. Mrs Moody leads the Year 5 team.
When moving into Year 5, the children are joining South End Junior School’s ‘Upper Hub’. It is our aim to equip the children with tools to further develop their independence as learners and help them learn skills for life, which they can then apply to a variety of situations. As a year team, we endeavour to do this by providing engaging, purposeful and exciting learning opportunities and having high expectations of the children in terms of behaviour and work ethic. We strive for all children to achieve their full potential and be confident young people.

Our trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester
Year 5 pupils visited the National Space Centre in Leicester to launch their learning about Stargazers. They explored the exhibitions: learning about The Space Race, the 8 planets and the Solar System. They also got to visit the planetarium and learn how to be an astronaut!
I found out that Katherine Johnson was the person to send Apollo 11 into space but her job was wrongly made difficult because of her skin colour.

I learnt a way to remember the order of the planets which is: Mercury, Venus, Earth ,Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Did you know it takes four weeks (28 days) for the moon to fully orbit the Earth. Also, the moon goes through 8 phases!

I know now that Henry VIII had six wives and he beheaded two of them - Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. He divorced Catherine Of Aragon and Anne Of Cleves. Jane Seymour was his true love but she died 12 days after giving Henry his son.

Before we did this project, I didn't know what the punishments were during Tudor times and how bad they were! I now know there were many punishments like the drunkards cloak, hung drawn and quartered and boiling.

Did you know that Tudors didn't live as long because they didn't have medicines? Rich Tudors easily became overweight and unhealthy because they didn't know what healthy food was and both rich and poor Tudors ate little fruit.

Year 5 enjoyed their visit to the Gurdwara, Mosque and Church. They were amazed with the differences in the architecture and design of the different religious buildings and were captivated by the size and grandeur of the Gurdwara. Our school values were upheld with everyone showing the upmost respect of the different religions, donning headscarves, having vegetarian lunches and taking in the atmosphere and learning through quiet contemplation. With inquisitive minds, the children asked enquiring questions and listened with interest to the meanings behind each of the religions. A fabulous day of learning for all!
